Considering the expanding diplomatic relations of Indonesia with nations across the five continents not only in the political, military and economic relations but also in cultural relations as well as the other areas, the previously serving Dean of Social and Political Science Faculty Dr.Warsito, SU had the notion to establish a department of International Relations the in the midst of August 2010.
That enlarging diplomatic relations surely has unavoidable impacts to Indonesia herself. One of them is with the emergence of International Relations programs in universities across Indonesia and they have undoubtedly contributed greatly to the nation yet it’s still deemed non-optimal. Hence, Dr.Warsito, SU, considers an international relations focused department under the Social and Political Science Faculty will be appropriate to give another contribution towards the Indonesian government.
The International Relations Department of Social and Political Faculty of Diponegoro University is concentrated on international cooperation to combat international and transnational crime. The reason why the concentration was chosen is because the Department wish to offer ideas both to the Indonesian Government and relevant stakeholders on how to combat crimes that emerge as the consequence of the more intensive state engagement in this era.
However in order to realize it, support from the other departments under the Social and Political Faculty such as the Governmental Science, the Business Administration, and the Public Administration Science was greatly needed. The other university departments that has been long established such as the Law Faculty and The Faculty of Humanities, as well as domestic and foreign institutions, were also involved in developing the new Department of International Relations so that it will utilize potentials from various setting.
After gaining supports from various inside parties, finally the official proposal was created. Upon this need, a written support from party outside the Diponegoro University is also necessary. Another thing needed to complete the proposal was to collect compliance letter from lecturers to teach in the newly International Relations Department as well as to do the other technical preparation. However, after everything was compiled and agreed by the Senate and Dean of the University, the proposal was cancelled to be sent to the Director General of the Ministry of the Education due to the new regulation acquiring every proposal for new Department establishment to be sent online.
In accordance with the Director General of Ministry of Research, Technology and High Education Ministery regulation, each form of 1,2, and 3 was filled thoroughly. After the registration number was received, the other steps follow such as waiting for the approval for form number 4 and 5 and finally the Government of Indonesia trough the Directorate General of Higher Education with letter number 809/E/T/2011 dated 13 June 2011 hands the mandate to Diponegoro University to establish an International Relations Department (Undergraduate) in FISIP – UNDIP.
The Dean of the University then responded the letter stating his willingness to lead in excercising the mandate himself and begin both of the administrative and academic preparation, then on August 2011 Diponegoro University started to open for new student admission trough the Independent Exam path. There were total number of 1100 applicant but only 120 students were accepted.
